Terms of Use

Thankot.com is published by the Thankot.com Heritage Project from Thankot, Chandragiri Municipality, Nepal. By using the site you accept the terms on this page. If you do not accept them, the remedy is simple: stop using the site.

There is nothing to sign up for, nothing to pay and no account to close. We can change these terms, and the date at the foot of the page moves when we do.

The writing, photographs, maps and illustrations on this site are ours, and are protected by copyright in Nepal and internationally. Without asking us first you may:

• read, print and save pages for your own use, including offline on a trip;
• quote up to a couple of paragraphs in an article, thesis, forum post or guidebook, provided you credit Thankot.com and link to the page you took it from;
• link to any page here, from anywhere, including in commercial work.

Please ask first before you republish a full article, use our photographs, translate a page into another language, or bundle our text into an app, a printed book or an AI training set. We answer permission requests quickly and rarely refuse a credited, non-commercial one.

Third party material stays with its owner: quotations from published Nepali chronicles, images credited to another photographer and the trademarks of the cable car operator are named where they appear and are not ours to licence.

Fares, opening hours, bus routes, festival dates and trail conditions change, sometimes at a day's notice and sometimes without any announcement. Every page shows when it was last checked, and we go back and check them, but a figure that was right in August can be wrong in November.

So: treat what you read here as good, dated guidance, and confirm anything your day depends on with the operator, the temple committee or a local before you travel. Where we are not certain we give a range and say so.

Historical writing follows the same rule. Where an account comes from the vamshavali chronicle tradition or from oral history rather than a documented record, the text says which, and you should read it that way.

Hill walking, road travel and temple visits carry their own risks. You take them on your own judgement and at your own risk; we describe routes, we do not supervise them.

Both games are free, run entirely in your browser, need no account and carry no advertising. Your progress is stored on your own device, so clearing your browser data clears your board.

Langur Burja is played with money at festival stalls. The version on this site is not: there is no stake, no payout, no purchase of any kind and no link to any gambling operator. It exists so the rules of a Nepali festival game are recorded and playable.

We give no guarantee that either game is bug free or always available. If a board misbehaves, tell us which browser and device you were on and we will try to fix it.

Please do not use the contact form for marketing, link-building offers or bulk sending; do not run automated scripts against our API routes; and do not attempt to bypass the rate limiter, the request origin checks or the CAPTCHA. Those measures exist so a two person editorial desk can keep a public inbox open.

Reasonable crawling for search indexing is welcome. Scraping the whole site for republication or model training is not, and is covered by the permissions section above.

If you send us a correction, a photograph or a local account, you confirm it is yours to send and you allow us to publish it, edited for length and clarity, with credit if you want it. Tell us if you would rather stay anonymous.

The site is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss arising from using it: a missed bus, a temple that was closed, a fare that had gone up, or time lost to a page that would not load. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

We link to other sites, including operators and municipal pages. We do not control them and are not responsible for what they publish or how they handle your data.
